Shimano Cardiff A 401
The Cardiff is a mid-range round-profile baitcaster that is in a class of its own. It is strong, responsive and easy to use. The lightweight HAGANE aluminium body, combined with a milled aluminium spool, ensures excellent stability. Perfect for large lures in both fresh and salt water, this all-rounder offers precision and strength in an extremely high-quality complete package. Large lures that quickly push other baitcasters to their limits are no problem for this little all-rounder, even in saltwater, and the Cardiff masters this challenge with flying colours. Although it is not one of Shimano’s top-of-the-range models, this silver and gold-finished workhorse still impresses with its compelling performance. It handles the casting of medium-sized and large lures with ease.
Furthermore, it also excels with powerful and smooth reel performance. When paired with light jigging rods, it delivers an all-round successful performance in saltwater when fighting powerful marine predators. The Cardiff makes full use of the advantages of its ultra-strong HAGANE body. Lightweight and extremely robust, it has an excellent reputation and speaks to Shimano’s high build quality, which is further enhanced by the use of a milled aluminium spool. Even the handle is milled from aluminium. “Weakness” is a non-existent concept in the design and performance of the Cardiff. Shimano’s VBS (Variable Brake System) allows you to personally adjust the casting characteristics depending on lure size, conditions and casting style. The smallest 201A is the most versatile reel in the range and is suitable for light, medium and larger lures. The 301A can already handle large lures, whilst the 401A really comes into its own with the very largest lures.

Safety instructions:
“ - Handle hooks with care: Always cover the fishing hooks or remove them from the rods for transportation. Use corks or hook covers to avoid accidental injury.
- Keep your distance: Fish at least 10 meters away from others to avoid accidents. Watch out for people behind you before casting. Be careful with carbon fiber: Carbon fiber rods are strong but can be brittle. Avoid dropping them or banging them against hard surfaces as this can cause damage.
- Safe transportation: Always take your rod apart and place it in a protective cover during transportation to prevent damage from external influences.
- Carbon fiber rods conduct electricity. Do not use them during thunderstorms or near power lines.
- Never try to pull lures or leaders out of trees or bushes by applying pressure to the rod and fishing line. This can result in the bait/lead being catapulted towards the angler. Use only your hands to free the bait/lead.
- Train beginners: Instruct children and beginners in the safe handling of rods and hooks to minimize risks.
- Safety distance: Always keep a distance of at least six meters from high-voltage power lines when carrying or using fishing rods.
- Avoid high sticking: Do not bend your rod too much while you are drilling a fish, which is known as “high sticking. Hold the rod at a maximum loading angle of 45 to 60 degrees to avoid breakage.
- Aligning the rod for snags: If your lure snags, keep the rod pointed at the hook while walking backwards to reduce the strain on the rod.
- Be careful with carbon fiber: Carbon fiber rods are strong but can be brittle. Avoid dropping them or banging them against hard surfaces as this can cause damage.
- Safe transportation: Always take your rod apart and place it in a protective cover during transportation to prevent damage from external influences.
