These baits originated in England in the 1960s. The word boilie comes from the English word "to boil". During production, boilies are boiled or steam-cooked, which makes them tough or extremely hard, depending on the recipe. An assembled boilie is very firm and can withstand strong casts and long periods in the water.

Boilies consist mainly of vegetable or animal flours. These include, for example, maize meal, blood meal, fish meal or hemp meal. Additives such as oils, extracts and flavourings round off the list of ingredients, and in some cases colouring agents are added.

The size of the boilie allows the angler to select his catch even more, so the by-catch and the catch of smaller carp is greatly minimised. The boilie is not offered on the hook itself like other baits, but attached to a hair. This is an inconspicuous and as thin as possible line that is attached directly to the hook shank. Another advantage of this assembly is the self-hooking effect on the lip. This prevents swallowing.
